Former middle school teacher Jennifer Caswell, who faces rape charges for having sex with her student, argued during an interview with Dr. Phil that her 15-year-old student was to blame in part for the unlawful relationship.
In her first interview, which airs on Tuesday, Caswell suggested that the boy was so persistent that she eventually had sex with him in her classroom.
“He came in, I was working on things, he kept coming closer to me and I would kind of walk away to the other part, you know another room, another area of the classroom and he just walked up to me and then he kissed me,” Caswell said. “And then it just kind of went from there.”
Caswell noted that during the two hours the student spent in her classroom, their encounter only lasted 15 minutes and they kept their clothes on. Caswell admitted that she didn’t tell her student to stop.
The 29-year-old blamed her lapse of judgment in part to her failing marriage to her husband of ten years. Caswell noted that her husband never paid her compliments and that they didn’t have a physical relationship, which is why she was so flattered by her student’s attention.
After the encounter, Caswell said she was terrified and couldn’t believe she’d done something like that. Caswell admitted to kissing the student during a different time before they had sex. In one instance, the 29-year-old followed the boy on his family vacation some 650 miles to Mississippi so they could have a secret tryst. The two reportedly also had sex in Caswell’s SUV and at her home.
Two months later, and after rousing suspicions, Caswell was arrested and now faces jail time. She will also be registered as a sex offender.
Caswell faces three counts of second-degree rape, two counts of enticing a child, and one count of forcible sodomy.
