Former daycare worker Desire Santiago stole a pair of gold and diamond earrings from a napping baby, and was arrested at the Bronx daycare on Wednesday.
A video of the act was caught on surveillance camera, which led police to arrest Santiago, the mother of a 2-year-old.
The video shows Santiago inside the Bronx daycare with a white scarf around her head. She picked up Amia Santana, rousing the girl from her sleep, and placed Santana on her lap. When a coworker left the room, Santiago snatched the earrings and pocketed them.
The 14-karat gold earrings were a gift from Santana’s grandfather, priced at $100.
“Luckily our daughter is unaware of this because she’s so little,” Samantha Viera, the girl’s mother, said.
Santiago was arrested at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning on the steps of the daycare, and denied having anything to do with the theft.
“Oh, my God, no!” Santiago said when asked if she stole the earrings.
The former daycare worker argued that she had removed one earring because the baby’s ears looked red. The other earring, she insisted, was already missing.
Santiago was charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property.
