A video (below) of a man pouring boiling water on a cat went viral after it was uploaded to Facebook on Feb. 4.
The video starts with a pot of water boiling on the stove. The man filming then carries the pot over to a window. When he opens the window, the cat meows loudly.
The man then throws the water onto the cat, who screams in pain. The cat attempts to run away but gets trapped in the porch.
The video was watched over 408,000 times within 12 hours, according to Mirror.
It was reportedly shot in Greenville, North Carolina, according to WNCT.
The Greenville Police Department received thousands of calls about the incident.
Officers were able to track down a Chicago man, identified as 18-year-old Leon Teague, the same day. He was questioned and subsequently charged with animal torture, a felony, and depicting animal cruelty, a misdemeanor.
Teague was due to appear in court on Feb. 5.
Police worked with other agencies in Eastern North Carolina to find the cat.
Local animal activists also joined the search and reported that the cat was found alive. But Animal Control officers were unable to catch the feline and check whether it had been injured.
