Florida Teacher Caught In Gibbs High School Fight With No Help (Video)

A fight at a Florida high school that was captured on cellphone video shows a teacher caught in the middle of the violence after attempting to keep the students from attacking each other.

The video shot by a student, who appears to be egging them on, shows two girls from Gibbs High School in the St. Petersburg verbally taunting each other, the Daily Mail reports. At one point, the teacher temporarily forms a barricade between the girls to try and get them to calm down.

The shouting match eventually turns into a physical fight, with the girls wrestling and punching each other. The teacher can do nothing but stand back and watch.

“I’m not sure if the teacher called for help or not,” Lisa Wheeler-Brown, president of the Council of Neighborhood Associations, told the Tampa Bay Times. “But if she did, it should not take 4 minutes and 32 seconds to get help in the classroom. I felt sorry for the teacher. She had no control. No help. No nothing.”

She called for help at some point, but it is not clear when, Pinellas County Schools spokeswoman Melanie Marquez Parra told the Times.

A campus monitor, two administrators and another teacher responded to the fight, Parra said.

She did not want to release the girls’ grades or the teacher’s name because it could identify the students.

Since the video was posted online, parents have voiced safety concerns not just for students, but for the teachers as well.

Stephanie Adkinson, principal at Gibbs, reassured parents with a voice mail, saying that the school takes safety seriously, and that the altercation was an isolated event. However, the Times reported that last year, Gibbs “issued 76 out-of-school suspensions for fighting, the most of any Pinellas [County] high school.”

Mike Puetz, St. Petersburg police spokesman, told the Times that officers were not called to the scene, but the two girls and the student who filmed the classroom fight face possible suspension, school reassignment or expulsion as punishment.
