A St. Cloud, Florida, woman shot and killed her daughter after mistaking her for an intruder.
Sherry Campbell, who is reportedly a 911 dispatcher for Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, woke up just before midnight on Dec. 29 and fired a shot at someone she believed to be an intruder.
The intruder turned out to be her 27-year-old daughter, Ashley Doby. Police said the shooting was, indeed, accidental, reports Orlando Sentinel.
“The homeowner's story is consistent with the physical evidence and the witness' statement,” Sgt. Denise Roberts said in a release, reports CNN. “At this time, the incident appears to be an accidental shooting; however, the investigation is ongoing."
St. Cloud Police Cpl. Claude Campbell, Sherry's husband and the stepfather of Doby, called 911 and told the dispatcher that his stepdaughter “passed out” because of a heart problem. Claude was asleep when his wife, 45-year-old Sherry, shot Doby, reports Orlando Sentinel.
Neighbors said they were surprised the shooting took place because of how safe the neighborhood is.
“That's really shocking, actually,” resident Harry Morris said. “I've been here for 14 years, and nothing like this has ever happened. It's usually very quiet."
An investigation is ongoing, but no criminal charges have been filed.
