Shanard Neely was impaled on a fence at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department in Florida on Sunday.
Neely approached police outside the building and told them there might be a warrant for his arrest.
According to CBS Miami, Neely told officers that he had recently smoked a drug called flakka.
While officers ran a computer check, Neely suddenly bolted towards the fence, but didn't make it over (video below).
Neely found himself impaled by a foot-long spike that entered through his upper thigh and exited via his buttocks.
Fortunately, a fire truck was nearby and was able to help, along with a tactical response team. Authorities used circular saws on the fence while Neely was told to stay still or risk bleeding to death.
After more than 20 minutes, the spike and Neely were taken to a local hospital.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, flakka is a cheap street drug that causes bizarre behavior, much like bath salts.
The drug has become popular in South Florida where 2015 incidents have included: a naked gunman on a roof, a man who tried to kick down a glass door at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and another individual who attacked an elderly woman and left a trail of blood.
