Florida Man Convicted in Videotaped Beating of Teenager

Publish date:

A Florida man who severely beat up a teenager in an attack that was videotaped and posted to YouTube has been convicted on various charges and faces as many as 57 years in prison.

Last August two 16-year-olds got into a fight in a backyard in Brevard County. Instead of breaking up the fight, the father of one of the teens, 35-year-old Gary Johnson, egged the boys on while someone else videotaped it.

Johnson's son lost, and he apparently wasn't happy with the way the other boy fought, so he challenged him.

"I was all 'adrenalin-ed' up," the teen testified last week, admitting he did not back down from the 6-5, 220 pound man.

Johnson proceeded to beat the teen, breaking his teeth and busting his lip.

The defense tried to convince the jury that the teen got was he was asking for, but the jury apparently disagreed, convicting him of battery, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and disorderly conduct.

WOFL-TV in Orlando reports that Johnson fainted after the jury delivered its verdict on Friday.

Although he faces the possibility of the long prison term, both sides expect the judge to sentence Johnson to the ten-year minimum.
