Richard McTear Jr., 26, was convicted of first-degree murder by a Florida jury on Thursday.
McTear’s conviction is the result of a 2009 incident in which he threw his former girlfriend’s baby out of a moving car, killing it instantly.
According to prosecutors, McTear argued with the child’s mother, Jasmine Bedwell, and threw the baby against a wall before grabbing it and driving off. Then, on Interstate 275, McTear threw the child out of a car window.
In addition the first-degree murder charge, McTear was convicted of felony murder, burglary, aggravated child abuse, battery and kidnapping.
Bedwell cried when the verdict was read yesterday.
“It’s justice, and it’s over,” she said.
Prosecutor Ron Gale said McTear’s guilt was clear.
"The evidence in this case that you've received over the last week has proven beyond every reasonable doubt that Richard McTear is guilty as charged of the crimes of which he's charged," ABC Actions News records Gale saying.
McTear is yet to be sentenced. Bay News 9 reports that the deceased child’s mother and father will make victim impact statements at his sentencing.
