Man Tackled In Walmart By Fellow Customer For Carrying Legally-Permitted Gun (Video)

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Tuesday morning for tackling another man who was carrying a legally-permitted gun at a Brandon, Florida Walmart.

The Tampa Tribune reports the sheriff’s office later put out a news release detailing the arrest as well as releasing surveillance video of the incident.

Clarence Daniels, 62, told the Tampa Bay Times he was just going to Walmart to buy some coffee creamer for his wife when he was tackled from behind and wrestled to the ground.

As he got out of his car in the store parking lot, deputies believe Michael Foster, 43, saw Daniels reach into his car, grab a gun and place it in a holster under his jacket.

Without dialing 911 or calling store security, Foster followed Daniels into the store where he tackled Daniels and placed him in a chokehold, deputies said.

“He’s got a gun,” Foster shouted after tackling Daniels, according to sheriff’s deputies who arrived later.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Larry McKinnon said Daniels shouted back multiple times that he had a permit to carry the gun.

The men were eventually separated and held until deputies arrived on the scene.

Foster was arrested and charged with battery.

“Unfortunately he tackled a guy that was a law-abiding citizen,” McKinnon said. “We understand it's alarming for people to see other people with guns, but Florida has a large population of concealed weapons permit-holders.”

McKinnon said it is always best for citizens to refrain from taking matters into their own hands, particularly when a gun is involved. He suggested people dial 911 if they have a concern.

“You better make sure there's a good reason,” he said. “Otherwise you might be confronting a guy that is legally permitted to carry a gun.”
