Florida Man Allegedly Smothered Toddler To Play Video Games

A Florida man is accused of smothering his crying 16-month-old son so he could go back to playing video games and watching TV.

Cody Wygant, 24, was charged with third-degree murder and child neglect in Citrus County.

He told police he was frustrated with his son, Daymeon Wygant, who was crying uncontrollably, preventing him from playing video games. Investigators say he covered the boy’s mouth for three to four minutes until the child grew tired.

He placed him in a playpen and covered him with bedding. Officials said the body was tucked in.

He didn’t check on Daymeon for five hours. During that time he played Xbox games and watched three episodes of “Fringe.”

Daymeon was not breathing when emergency crews responded to his home Thursday. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, sheriff's deputies said.

"It is inconceivable that a father could kill his infant son — it just baffles the mind," Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said. "Our only sense of relief now comes from knowing that we did exactly what we needed to do to bring justice to him swiftly. Our prayers go out to those who knew and loved Daymeon."

Wygant is currently being held at Citrus County Jail.

The child’s mother, Wygant’s girlfriend, was not home at the time of the murder.

The woman, who’s name was not released, also has a 3-month-old daughter with Wygant. The girl is now in custody of the Department of Children and Families.
