Florida GOP Candidate To Give Away AR-15 Assault Rifle

Republican Florida State Sen. Greg Evers is holding a "Homeland Defender Giveaway" that will award one free AR-15 assault rifle, only a week after a gunman used a similar firearm to kill 49 people in Orlando, Florida, on June 12.

Evers, who is running for a U.S. Congress seat, wrote on his website: "With terrorism incidents on the rise, both at home and abroad, protecting our constitutional rights has never been more important. With all that’s happening in the world today, I’ve never felt stronger about the importance of the second amendment in protecting our homeland than I do now."

The Washington Post noted in November 2015 that there is "little evidence that more guns — especially in the possession of regular citizens — would do much to change the outcome when gun-bearing terrorists, bombs strapped to their chests, barrel through concert halls, sporting events, restaurants, and other public spaces."

The newspaper cited a 2015 study that found that when people without gun training were armed and put into similar scenarios, they didn't take cover, didn't try to give commands to assailants, and either shot innocent people or unarmed folks. Sometimes, the armed Americans didn't shoot at an armed assailant until after the assailant opened fire on them.

Evers' website says that the winner of the assault rifle will have to pass a federal background check and adds that Evers has an A+ rating from the NRA, which has strongly opposed universal background checks.

The winner of the assault rifle will reportedly be chosen from those who have "liked" Evers' Facebook campaign page.

According to Evers' Facebook page on June 21, one of his images was reported and removed from Facebook:

Facebook removed one of two posts related to the "Homeland Defender" giveaway after a California-based liberal activist reported the post for "promoting graphic violence" (see image below). Facebook couldn’t be more wrong about the nature of the post. But, the good news is that we anticipated this and all contest entries from liking and sharing that post have been saved. Also, you can like and share any of my posts, or just like my page and you’ll be entered to win.
