A Florida day care employee was arrested after a man picked up his 4-year-old son and found he had a bleeding gash on his head.
Carolyn Philogene-Hylton, 59, was arrested Wednesday and booked into Brevard County jail on charges of child abuse and neglect.
Palm Bay police say the 4-year-old was injured around 9:30 a.m. on June 27. He was still bleeding when his father, 54-year-old Terry Farmer, picked him up from Woodlake Wonderland that afternoon.
Philogene-Hylton allegedly informed her supervisors around 4 p.m. that the child had a bump on his head from a fall.
The boy told police that Philogene-Hylton had grabbed him by the shirt and shook him. He fell and his head hit “the wall.” He said there was a lot of blood.
When the day care owner reviewed surveillance video, he saw Philogene-Hylton take the child into a bathroom and close the door. After several minutes the door opened and the boy had a bandage on the back of his head.
Because she didn’t report the injury to senior staff, the boy didn’t get the medical attention he needed.
Farmer took his son to a local hospital where a doctor said the cut required stitches but because of the time delay they would have to staple the wound, increasing the risk of infection.
"I feel like no kid should have to go through that," Farmer said.
Police found blood at the day care and said it’s likely the child struck his head on a water heater.
