Florida Cop Helps Man Stranded In Wheelchair During Thunderstorm (Video)

A police officer in Fort Meyers, Florida went above and beyond the call of duty to help a wheelchair bound man who was stuck in the rain.

Reports say that Officer Gil Benitez received a call around 8:30 p.m. last week from a man who was stranded in his electric wheelchair on the side of the road during a thunderstorm. Benitez responded to the call and saw Michael Arnold sitting in his wheelchair completely stuck while rain poured on top of him.

"The wind picked up like crazy,” said Arnold. "I got to the end of the street and everything just stopped on me."

“It was raining so hard, I couldn't even see the stop sign,” said Benitez.

Arnold was reportedly only a block away from his home when his wheelchair gave out, and just as Benitez pulled up to help him, lightening struck right near the two, barely missing them. Undeterred, Officer Benitez proceeded to push Arnold home in the pouring rain, dry him off, and stay with him until his family arrived.

“There's not many nice people in the U.S. but you'll come across one, or two people, or three people, that are saying I've got to help, and that's what they did," said Arnold.

Benitez insists he’s not a hero and says that any other officer would have done what he did in that moment.

“I’m not a hero. I’m just an officer. I’m just doing my job,” said Benitez.
