After finding five children under the age of 5 crossing a Florida street in unclean diapers Dec. 29, their caretaker was arrested.
Police have charged Samantha McCarthy, 24, for child neglect, the Daily Mail reports.
The woman had been sleeping in a Motel 6 when the children somehow got out of the room in the morning and tried to cross a busy highway to get to Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.
The park is a tourist attraction featuring underwater performances by women dressed as mermaids, who have appeared in various films and shows like "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," the park’s website says.
A concerned motorist discovered the children unharmed, and stopped them from crossing the highway.
When the children were unable to say what their names were or who their parents were, the individual alerted the police, reports NBC.
Half an hour later, McCarthy showed up, explaining that she’d been looking for them and that she had no idea how they got out as she locked the door.
Police later arrested McCarthy after discovering one of the children had a “severe rash on various parts of her body.”
McCarthy explained she planned to take the child to a doctor that day, and that the child only had the rash for a few days.
After paramedics said the child had it for weeks, and deputies confirmed no appointment had been made with a doctor, the police arrested her at the scene. She is currently in jail with bail set at $5,000.
Authorities found the Motel 6 room she and the children has been staying in to be relatively bare, with no food and little clothing.
It is unclear what the nature of her relationship to the children is, and their parents' names have not been released.
The Department of Children and Families took the five children, ages 1 to 5, into care, while the youngest child received treatment at a hospital for her rash.
