A Texas man has been apprehended after police found eight people — six children and two adults — dead inside of a Houston-area home.
Deputies were called to a home at 2211 Falling Oaks Road around 9 p.m. Saturday to perform a welfare check. When they arrived, nobody responded at the front door. They then reportedly received information that a man inside the home was wanted for aggravated assault on a family member.
When deputies surrounded the home while waiting for a High Risk Operations Unit to arrive, they spotted the body of a juvenile through a window. Four deputies then forced entry into the home, which prompted the 49-year-old suspect to start shooting at them.
The deputies pulled back to wait for the operations unit, and the suspect surrendered about an hour later.
According to NY Daily News, authorities have identified the victims as Valerie Jackson, 40, her husband, Dwayne Jackson, 50, and children Nathaniel Conley, 13, Honesty Jackson, 11, Dwayne Jackson Jr., 10, Caleb Jackson, 9, Trinity Jackson, 7, and Jonah Jackson, 6.
A turbulent past romantic relationship between the suspect, identified as David Ray Conley, and mother Valerie appears to be the motive for the killings.
"Homicide detectives have taken over the operation along with our crime scene unit," said Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Thomas Gilliland. "Due to the amount of victims and the proximity to the people in the house, it'll be a scene that's going on for a while."
Alan Cartagena, 19, said that he was attending a barbecue a few houses away from the scene when deputies started knocking on doors around the neighborhood.
"Cops were walking around with their handguns out, telling people to remain in their houses," he said. "They were also telling them to evacuate. It was extremely scary."
