Fishermen in the Philippines got a hair-raising glimpse at the diet of a tiger shark this week.
The fishermen were initially proud of their 12-foot long, 600-pound catch, but that pride turned to horror when they opened the beast’s stomach and found human remains inside.
“It was so disgusting. We can’t bear the awful smell,” said Bodoy Gorgod, one of the fishermen. “We feared that the human remains may bring bad luck to us, so we opted to drop to the sea the shark’s body and what’s inside its belly.”
The fishermen initially kept the jaw of the shark as a trophy, but later discarded that as well. One of the fishermen’s wives let her superstition get the best of her.
“I don’t want the sight of that jaw, knowing that the shark had eaten a human being,” she told Minda News. "Who knows, the victim’s spirit might visit us."
No one is certain about who the shark’s victim was, but there are theories. Some locals think the body might have been that of a passenger from a recently-sunken ferry in the region.
