Malaysia police are investigating a woman after she chained her 8-year-old daughter to a lamp post as punishment for missing school.
The incident occurred at a parking lot in Kuala Lumpur. Several passersby were shocked when they saw the little girl with a chain locked around her right ankle and connected to a lamp post, the Daily Mail reported. She stood in embarrassment while sucking her thumb.
The little girl appeared to be in school uniform. She had a backpack and a bottle of water next to her on the ground.
Authorities were called to the scene. The little girl told police that her mother chained her to the lamp post as punishment for misbehaving.
The 8-year-old girl also told authorities her mother was returning soon to unlock her. Officers decided to wait for the mother to return.
The mother showed up about 10 minutes later. She confessed to police that she chained her daughter to punish her for refusing to go to school.
Law enforcement officials ordered the woman to unlock the child. The mother and daughter were taken to a local police station for questioning, the New Straits Times reported.
“We established that it was the first time the girl was chained,” Assistant Police Commissioner Mohammad Azlin Sadari said in a statement. “It was decided to let the mother go home with her daughter, warning her not to do it again.”
It has not been reported exactly how long the little girl was chained to the lamp post. It is also unknown if she had gone to school that day. The photo was reportedly taken after school hours.
Sadari added that the mother was not completely off the hook yet. He said police were investigating the case under a local Child Act. Under this act, the mother could be charged with neglect and exposure of a child to physical injury.
