Sensitive songstress, Fiona Apple, has cancelled five of her upcoming shows to spend time with
her ailing dog, Janet.
In a heartfelt, handwritten letter to her fans, Apple explained her decision to be with Janet as the dog's health declines, "I will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship... I can't come to South America. Not now."
Janet, a 13-year-old pit bull, suffers from Addison's Disease and has struggled with a growing chest tumor for 2 years. Frequent injections make traveling nearly impossible for the canine.
Apple first welcomed Janet into her life when the puppy was only 4 months old. Found with a rope around her neck in Los Angeles' Echo Park, Janet had been abused and used in dog fights to "puff up the confidence of the contenders."
It's no surprise that Apple, a vegan and animal rights defender, was drawn to the rescued puppy.
While fans will be disappointed to miss seeing the Grammy winner perform, it is nothing to the heartbreak Apple is experiencing at the thought of losing a beloved friend, whom she called "the most consistent relationship of [her] adult life."
The dates cancelled are part of the singer's "The Idler Wheel ... " album tour and include three shows in Brazil, a show in Mexico City on Dec. 9, and performances on Dec. 1 and 2 at a festival in Buenos Aires.
Apple promised fans she would make up the cancelled shows.
