A Saginaw, Michigan, woman could get life in prison for raping a man.
Lestina Marie Smith, 17, stands accused of raping a 19-year-old man at knife point, allegedly forcing him to engage in oral and vaginal sex, reports Michigan Live.
She was arraigned on Jan. 17 on two felony counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Each charge carries a maximum punishment of life in prison.
Smith is being held without bond in Saginaw County Jail. She is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 3 for a preliminary hearing to determine probable cause.
Smith's friends and family have rallied around her on social media, posting messages of support on her Facebook page, reports the Daily Mail.
One commenter on her Facebook page took issue with the length of her potential prison sentence if convicted, comparing it to the light sentence handed down to Brock Turner, the white student who made headlines after being given a very lenient sentence after being found guilty of raping an unconscious woman.
"This is what we're talking about when we mention 'privilege,'" writes the angry user. "Brock Turner, a white teenage boy, assaults an unconscious woman, leading her back to a dumpster and inserting his fingers inside of her, and is is tackled mid-act by two men. For this crime, he serves six months…. If you do not believe our country and our culture is racist and sexist, look no further. Where is the talk of Lestina Smith's future? Of the life ahead of her, of her ability, of her potential?"
The rape of men is more common than is usually thought. “Millions of men in the United States have been victims of rape,” according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization.
“About 3% of American men -- or 1 in 33 -- have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime,” the organization notes, adding: “1 out of every 10 rape victims [is] male.”
