Which Cities Have The Highest Violent Crime Rates? (Photos)
The Federal Bureau of Investigations recently released its annual statistics for major U.S. cities with the highest crime rates, with Detroit making the list at number 1.
Violent crime in general ticked up in 2012, but the bureau published its 2013 Uniform Crime Reporting stats on Monday, and it shows murder decreasing again.
According to the new report, there were an estimated 14,196 murders last year, a 4.4 percent decrease compared to 2012. Property crimes also headed downwards nationally by about 4.1 percent.
“The crime statistics report, issued by the Bureau's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, contains voluntarily submitted data from 18,415 city, county, state, tribal, campus, and federal law enforcement agencies on specific crimes brought to their attention,” the FBI's report stated. “They include the violent crimes of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.”
However, the Huffington Post reports that the FBI warns against using the new statistics to make assumptions about locales or to rank law enforcement agencies. The statistics exclude factors such as population density, economic conditions and employment rates, which can affect crime differently across cities.
Below are the 10 U.S. cities with populations over 200,000 that had the highest murder rates in 2013, according to the FBI's 2013 Uniform Crime Report.
