Former Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani of New York has confirmed that FBI officials had given him prior notice of the bureau's latest leaks that have negatively impacted the campaign for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
On Oct. 25, Giuliani had signaled that pending revelations would change the trajectory of the presidential race in GOP nominee Donald Trump’s favor during an interview with Fox News’ “Fox and Friends.”
“I think [Donald Trump's] got a surprise or two that you’re going to hear about in the next few days,” Giuliani said. “I mean I’m talking about some pretty big surprises. ... We’ve got a couple things up our sleeve that should turn this around.”
On Oct. 28, FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to Congress announcing that his bureau had discovered emails that may pertain to their investigation into Clinton’s use of a private server, notes The Guardian.
Following that letter, there have been several leaks trickling out from the FBI, with anonymous agents telling reporters that they were finding incriminating evidence in their investigation of the Clinton Foundation, which the Department of Justice (DOJ) denies.
On Nov. 4, Giuliani sat down with the Fox News morning show hosts again and was asked if his previous statements were referring to the recent string of FBI leaks.
“I did nothing to get it out, I had no role in it,” Giuliani said. “Did I hear about it? You’re darn right I heard about it, and I can’t even repeat the language that I heard from the former FBI agents,” Giuliani said.
Giuliani, who had cultivated contacts with former and currently active FBI agents during his time as U.S. Attorney and as mayor of New York City, recalled that his sources told him “that there’s a revolution going on inside the FBI and it’s now at a boiling point.”
Following the recent leaks, several retired and active FBI agents who requested anonymity told The Guardian that there are agents inside the bureau who are openly hoping to derail Clinton’s presidential campaign.
“The FBI is Trumpland,” one currently active agent said, adding that Clinton is viewed as “the antichrist personified to a large swath of FBI personnel.”
A former FBI official disputed the perception that the FBI is actively rooting for a Trump victory, stating that both presidential candidates are viewed unfavorably.
“There are lots of people who don’t think Trump is qualified, but also believe Clinton is corrupt,” the former official said. “What you hear a lot is that it’s a bad choice, between an incompetent and a corrupt politician.”
Throughout the presidential race, Giuliani has referenced his FBI sources while stumping for Trump, The Daily Beast reports.
FBI guidelines forbid active agents and officials from discussing ongoing cases with public partisans.
