A father hit and killed his 16-month-old son as he was heading for work in an SUV on Monday.
Michael Nice, 34, reportedly made a u-turn while driving on Cooper Street in Courtdale, Pennsylvania, at around 9 a.m., when he hit his son, Michael Nice Jr.
“I was at work. They called me at work and I got here as fast as I could,” Mary Nice, the child’s grandmother, told WNEP (video below). “That’s all I know and he said the baby ran out.
"He said, ‘I killed my baby. I killed my baby.’”
According to a neighbor who preferred to remain anonymous, Michael was speaking with the boy's mother when the toddler wandered around to the passenger side of the vehicle. When Michael pulled away, the vehicle went up and down and the mother began to scream.
“I heard the lady out here yelling, ‘Help, help help!’ And I came out and she was ten feet in front of me holding her son,” Robert Derby, another neighbor, told WNEP. “I hung up the phone and I called 911 and they said they were sending everyone they could.”
Derby said it was the worst thing he’d ever seen in his life.
Michael was handcuffed, arrested on suspicion of DUI, and taken to have his blood tested. He was then released to his family.
Vouching for Michael, neighbor Maureen Evansky noted that the death would be especially difficult for him because he is a devoted and loving father.
In an interview with WNEP, the boy's mother said the event was a nightmare and that she’s trying to mourn the loss of her son while dealing with judgment from the community.
State police are currently investigating the case. On Monday, the SUV was impounded.
No charges have been filed yet.
