An Ohio man was arrested on Tuesday after a heated domestic dispute in his Cleveland home led to the fatal shooting of his 2-year-old son.
The father, who was not identified, allegedly got into an argument around 5:30 a.m. with the boy’s mother.
He walked out of the apartment into a communal space between two buildings. As he was leaving, he allegedly fired one shot back into the apartment, Cleveland police deputy chief Ed Tomba told Cleveland.com.
The bullet hit the sleeping 2-year-old. He was taken to Lutheran Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The father fled the scene and tried to dump his handgun in a dumpster, Tomba said. He rammed his car through a nearby fence and ran into a water treatment facility on foot, where police took him into custody.
Tomba said the father was “distraught.” He noted that domestic violence investigators “have a history at this apartment.”
