Police discovered the body of a dead woman inside a man's truck after he crashed into a tree.
Authorities initially received a report of domestic violence in an apartment complex in El Cajon, California, reports KGTV.
As soon as officers arrived at the scene, they saw a man speed away in a red Mazda truck. The officers pursued him, ordering the driver to pull over, but he refused to follow orders and ran a red light.
Eventually, backup from San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was called in to help with the chase. The 54-year-old man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree in a median.
The crash shut down traffic and littered the roadway with debris. Another vehicle, a sedan, was also damaged from the collision and was stuck at the scene. It is unclear if the sedan was involved or related to the red Mazda truck.
Witnesses say the red Mazda truck was destroyed. “It was trippy,” says one witness.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to KNSD.
Once authorities checked the truck, they discovered the body of an unidentified 41-year-old woman. Paramedics say the woman had died some time before the collision.
Police suspect foul play in the woman’s death.
The man’s neighbor, Colleen Thornton, says she would often hear “noisy fighting” from his apartment.
The 54-year-old man had reportedly moved in with the woman before she was evicted from the apartment complex.
“From neighbors I’ve heard that he showed up [Friday] night, and he told another neighbor he had a body in the car,” Thornton said.
Investigators are handling the case. The man’s relationship with the dead woman in his truck and the cause of her death are still being determined.
