A Virginia family says their German Shepherd attacked an intruder while they were out.

When Tristan Murrin and his mother came home on Aug. 10, they found blood spattered all over their floors and walls, WRIC reported. They didn't notice anything out of the ordinary at first, but when Murrin saw his dog, Oden, waiting for them at the front door, he knew something was off.

“We noticed something when we walked in, when I walked in with my mother and there is blood spots on the ground, we looked up stairs and you see trails of blood coming from up stairs going all the way down,” Murrin told WRIC.

More blood was found on the walls upstairs. Murrin said nothing was stolen from the home, and that the trespasser was no longer inside the home when they arrived.

The robbery attempt comes after a series of break-ins in the neighborhood. Murrin said that although his German Shepherd is a big dog, he is hardly ever aggressive, and is friendly with children.

"He plays with the kids, the cul-de-sac knows him," Murrin told the news station. "The community loves him, the kids come up to him and want to touch him and play with him."

Murrin said he is grateful his dog is OK, but added that he is happy the German Shepherd stood its ground.

“I think the dog did its job. He knew that someone was not supposed to be in my house and no one was home and he knows that he wasn’t supposed to be in there and he was doing something that he wasn’t supposed to be doing and so he knew to act upon it,” Murrin said.

The family now hopes their story will help lead to the intruder's arrest. They believe whoever broke into their home must have required serious medical attention.

Murrin took to Facebook to share a video of the scene, the Daily Mail reported. That video quickly went viral, and was viewed more than 16 million times.

"My best friend Oden who is a German shepherd, protected my home and belongings when I wasn't there, I couldn't be more proud of him," Murrin wrote in the caption, according to the Daily Mail. "Such an amazing breed that's why everyone who doesn't have an actual dog should consider on adopting or buying a dog. Please share and like to get the story out."

Police are currently investigating.
