Ex-Girlfriend Charged With Giving Guns To Kansas Shooter

The ex-girlfriend of Cedric Ford, who killed three people and wounded 14 when he opened fire at his workplace in Hesston, Kansas, on Feb. 25, has been charged with providing him with guns.

Sarah Hopkins, the mother of Ford’s four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, is charged with one count of knowingly transferring a weapon to a convicted felon, The Wichita Eagle reports.

Prosecutors claim Hopkins was aware that Ford was a convicted felon and was not allowed to possess firearms.

She may serve up to 10 years in prison for giving Ford a Zastava AK-47-style semi-automatic rifle and a Glock .40-caliber handgun, according to NBC News.

The relationship between Hopkins and Ford ended in July 2015. She told an ATF agent that she took the guns with her when she moved out of their home, but returned them to Ford after he threatened her, according to a criminal complaint.

Hopkins purchased the guns in 2014 and later pawned them, a pawn shop employee said. She allegedly removed the AK-47-type rifle from pawn on Feb. 5. It is unknown when repossession of the Glock occurred.

Hopkins is not the woman who served Ford with a protective order about 90 minutes before the shooting began, which authorities believe triggered his actions.

In the protective order, Ford is described as “an alcoholic, violent, depressed,” and in “desperate need of medical and psychological help,” CBS News reports.

Ford used the firearms he had obtained from Hopkins in the shooting.

Ford was killed by Hesston Police chief Doug Schroeder after he took the lives of three people and left 14 wounded.
