Two EMS workers in Detroit were seriously injured by a man who attacked them with a box cutter.
The attack occurred on Oct. 20 when the workers responded to a woman with a sprained ankle.
After working on her for several minutes, they decided the woman would not be transported to the hospital in their vehicle, prompting a man she was with to become angry and pull out a weapon, Click On Detroit reported.
The attacker stabbed and slashed 25-year-old Alfredo Rojas first. When 49-year-old Kelly Adams came to his aid, she was also attacked.
“[They drove away] to save their lives,” Interim Executive Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said, according to Click On Detroit. “They decided that they needed to get to the hospital right away. The medics drove themselves, and I'm glad they did. I'm glad they're here."
“They came within inches of dying,” he added, according to Mad World News. “Both of them are going to require some extensive surgeries and a very long recovery.”
The woman who Rojas and Adams were treating reportedly fled with the attacker, despite her ankle injury. Both of them have since been arrested.
