Employee Allegedly Fired For Chasing After Shoplifter (Video)

An employee at a Christmas Tree Shops store in Salem, New Hampshire, was allegedly fired for chasing a shoplifter.

Robert Morrissey, 28, is accused of stuffing items in his jacket and leaving the store without paying. When the theft detection scanner went off, the 60-year-old female employee working the customer service desk chased after him, reports My FOX Boston.

"She chased him outside as he was running from her," said Salem Police Sgt. Jason Smith.

The woman’s coworkers told FOX 25 that her actions got her fired.

"She called out to him, asking him to stop," Smith said. "He refused and began running through the parking lot. She followed him. And he started throwing items onto the ground."

Officers claim it could have been a potentially dangerous situation.

Customers are upset over the firing.

"She was trying to do the company a service it sounds like by protecting them," said customer Billie Wyatt.

"It's ridiculous," said shopper Paul Calder. "Why would they fire her for trying to stop a shoplifter?"

The woman had been working at the store for about a year. Requests for comment from Christmas Tree Shops’ corporate office were denied, with a spokesperson for the company stating they cannot discuss personal matters.

Morrissey was arrested and has been released on $1,000 bail.
