An elderly woman in Arkansas reportedly shot and killed a 19-year-old home intruder in the early hours of Oct. 29.
Police said the woman, who is in her late 80s and lives alone, had told the man to leave her home, according to Tribune Media Wire Service. The woman said the intruder then advanced toward her, and she shot him to defend herself.
The man was identified as Cody Smith, from Marion, Arkansas.
Smith's friends said that he had gone to a Halloween party that night, and appeared to be intoxicated when he left the gathering. Friends said they believed he may have entered the wrong house on his way home, according to WLWT.
"We heard he was under the influence of something and wrecked his car," said the elderly woman's neighbor, John Rimmer. "At first it was told that he thought he was walking to his house. I didn't know where his house is, in this neighborhood I assume."
"Of course it makes you be a little more concerned about your neighborhood if you have people that are breaking into homes," added Rimmer. "It's still sad that a man that age, a young man just starting his life for whatever reason is taking those kinds of steps and ends up losing his life for it."
Smith was a recent graduate of Marion High School, where counselors helped students cope with the young man's death on Oct. 30, WHBQ reports.
"It has affected our town and surrounding towns also, and it's just sad that a young person would have something happen in his life that would lead to such fatal consequences," said Cindy Landry. "It's just a very, very sad mistake."
"It's heartbreaking for his family and it's heartbreaking for the woman that was involved with it also," added Landry.
A GoFundMe has been started for Smith's family, and it had gotten more than $5,000 in donations in three days.
According to police, who found that the home had been "forcefully entered," the investigation for the incident is ongoing. No charges have been filed.
In a similar story in Frankfort, Indiana, a homeowner shot and killed a man who had reportedly broken into his home on Oct. 31, according to WRTV.
Officers arrived at the Clinton County home around 10 p.m. after the homeowner called to say he had just shot a home intruder. The man was not able to be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The intruder was later identified as 37-year-old Kevin Huffer.
Clinton County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the incident.
