An 81-year-old Michigan man was reunited with a son he didn't know he had after finding a letter his wife kept from him for nearly 60 years.
Tony Trapani says he was cleaning out filing cabinets after his wife recently died when he stumbled upon a letter written by a woman nearly 60 years ago. The letter reportedly explained that she had given birth to a son and that Trapani was the father. Trapani believes that his wife intercepted the letter and hid it for nearly 60 years because she was dealing with fertility issues.
"She wanted children," Trapani said. "She couldn't have any. She tried and tried. He’s my full son that I’ve had my whole life, but why my wife hid that letter is beyond me."
The letter, written in 1959 when the boy was just 5 years old, revealed to Trapani that he was the father.
"I have a little boy. He is five years old now," the letter reportedly reads. "What I’m trying to say Tony is he is your son. He was born November 14th, 1953."
Recently, Trapani and his now-61-year-old son were able to reunite, and Samuel Childress says it was amazing to meet the man he always believed had abandoned him.
"Just to know him now is so important to me. It’s going to fill that void," Childress admitted. "I always asked my mom, I said, 'Well what does he look like?' She said, 'Well, go look in the mirror.'"
Now, the father and son are taking the time to catch up on six decades of lost time, although they do plan to have a paternity test done to make sure that they are in fact father and son.
