An elderly couple in Albuquerque, New Mexico, held an alleged burglar at gunpoint until police arrived on the scene, KRQE News 13 reports (video below).

On Nov. 19, the 70-year-old man and his wife, 66, say they spotted 26-year-old Aaron Lujan loading items that he had reportedly stolen from the couple's home, including car keys, power tools and a generator, into a SUV parked across the street from their house.

After the elderly man failed to convince Lujan to return the items and leave, the couple say they armed themselves with weapons from their home and approached the burglar.

"The old man goes inside his house arms himself with a shotgun, tells his wife what is happening and she arms herself with a handgun," Tanner Tixier, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department, told KRQE.

The couple reportedly held Lujan at gunpoint while neighbors called police.

A police video shows officers arriving at the scene minutes later and arresting Lujan. At the end of the video, an officer handcuffs the man as he is lying face down in the street by the vehicle.

The video, which was posted on YouTube on Nov. 20, received more than 42,000 views in three days.

According to court records, Lujan was released from jail on a burglary charge only a few hours before the incident.

Police congratulated the couple for their quick thinking, and said that Lujan would likely still be at large if it weren't for them.

"More than likely he would have gotten away," Tixier told KRQE. "He would have gotten into the stolen vehicle that he was loading the items into and we probably never would have seen him again."

Police have not said what additional charges Lujan will face or whether he has an attorney, reports the Daily Mail.

Ron Paneboeuf, a friend of the couple, told KRQE the couple's actions were completely within character for them.

"It doesn’t surprise me at all that she would be willing to confront somebody that is doing wrong," Paneboeuf said of the elderly woman.
