E3 2014: And Pac-Man Makes Four

No, I don’t mean that only four characters will be featured in the latest installment of the Super Smash Bros. series set for release later this year for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U; everyone who knows anything about the game already knows that an impressive roster of playable characters have been revealed for the series including Link, Pikachu, Star Fox, Samus Aran, Princess Zelda, Princess Peach and many others. What I am talking about is the status of four of the main playable characters within the history of video gaming: Mario, Sonic, Mega Man and Pac-Man – four characters who are arguably considered four of the most legendary characters in gaming history and also very much representative of the companies that created them, Nintendo, Sega, Capcom and Namco.

Pac-Man had been a heavily rumored entrant in the game since it was announced that Namco Bandai would be developing the game alongside SoraLtd. and Nintendo, but he was only confirmed as a playable character on June 10th at the 2014 E3 Expo and will be featured in both versions of the game. Some gamers have been complaining and protesting the inclusion of Pac-Man in the game since the reveal of the details of the game, but I don’t have a problem with it. In fact, I think that Pac-Man’s inclusion in the game is nothing short of amazing. Bringing together the most well-known characters from these four companies, four of the oldest companies in gaming, is something some older gamers (like myself) have been dreaming of for years – and there is no more of a perfect game for them to be featured in together than one of the most popular fighting game franchises in recent history.

You can literally have these four characters face off against each other on a battlefield for the first time ever. Have all four characters fight it out the way these companies and characters fans have over the years. In short, this is a dream fight scenario in terms of video gaming. Couple that with the fact that other legendary characters like Donkey Kong, Pit and maybe Mr. Game & Watch (still unconfirmed for the game) and you have a who’s who of gaming history together in one game. Personally, I would love to see one more legendary character featured in the game, Simon Belmont from the Castlevania franchise, but there is no word on this and I really doubt that there have been plans to include him in the game. Honestly, with the game being this close to release, I highly doubt it will happen now. But that would have been one hell of a dream roster with him included…
