Boston Marathon Explosion: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Gets Death Penalty

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been sentenced to death by lethal injection.

A jury comprised of seven men and five women returned to U.S. District Court in Boston on May 15 after two full days of deliberation to announce the final decision. They deliberated for more than 14 hours before coming to their decision, reported CNN.

Tsarnaev, 21, was convicted last month on all 30 of the criminal counts against him for his role in the Boston Marathon bombings. During closing arguments, he was presented by his defense team as a younger brother eager to please his older brother who wasn't aware of the magnitude of his actions. As a result of this, the defense argued he should only receive life in prison for his crimes. The prosecution painted him as a violent terrorist who deserved nothing less than death.

The Boston Marathon bombings left three people dead and 260 people injured.

As with most death sentences, an appeal is likely, The New York Times reports.
