A Palm Beach, Florida, police officer allegedly shot and killed his son on Christmas Eve, according to the Broward Palm Beach New Times.
At around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, police received a call about a shooting in Delray Beach, and promptly responded. When they arrived, they discovered off-duty PBSO officer Shatara K. Shatara alongside his son Khamis, who was dead of a gunshot wound.
Neighbor Lauren Helerstein told WPTV that she was out walking her dogs when she noticed police on the scene.
“I walked out and there were like several cops, I would say about 20 to 30 police officers running by with assault rifles,” Helerstein said. “Everyone had their weapons drawn and they were telling me to get inside my house and lock my door."
21-year-old Khamis, who reportedly aspired to be a police officer, was a Criminal Justice major at Palm Beach State College.
The identities of Shatara and his son were not initially revealed, but two days after the shooting the Delray Police Department released a statement via Facebook confirming that the off-duty officer was, in fact, responsible and that Khamis was the victim.
“On Wednesday, the Delray Beach Police Department responded to a shooting that involved an Off Duty PBSO Deputy. When Officers arrived, they found 21 year old Khamis Shatara deceased. The deceased is the son of the Deputy involved and we believe the incident was domestic related,” the Department’s statement read. “This case is still active as our detectives continue to gather facts surrounding the incident. No further information is available at this time.”
