A man who was living in the United States on a "Dreamer" status is accused of raping a young resident.

Salvador Diaz-Garcia, 23, faces charges of raping and assaulting an unnamed 19-year-old woman on June 25, reports the Daily Mail.

"The DREAM Act (short for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) was a bill in Congress that would have granted legal status to certain undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children and went to school here," explains the Anti-Defamation League.

Although the bill never passed, "the term “DREAMer” has been used to describe young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, who have lived and gone to school here, and who in many cases identify as American," the ADL continues.

The term now refers to immigrants whose deportation has been officially delayed under the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, as explained by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services:

On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal. They are also eligible for work authorization. Deferred action is a use of prosecutorial discretion to defer removal action against an individual for a certain period of time. Deferred action does not provide lawful status.

Diaz-Garcia, a DACA recipient, allegedly attacked the woman while she was working out at the gym located in the apartment complex in which she lives in Burien, Washington.

Following the attack, the victim returned to her apartment, wearing only a tank top. Her injuries included missing teeth, a ripped ear and a broken jaw, according to the King County Sheriff's Office.

She told police that she saw the suspect follow her home after she got off a bus. The last thing she remembered was leaving the gym, and then waking up at the hospital.

At the gym, police found blood on the front of the treadmill, carpet and walls. They believe the victim was hit over the head with a kettlebell, which was covered in blood.

A rape kit found male DNA, although it is unclear if it belonged to the suspect.

Diaz-Garcia's fiancee told police that on night of the rape, he had returned home "acting in a way that scared her," according to reports.

He is currently being held at King County Jail on $350,000 bond.
