Donald Trump launched a smear website in response to a $40 million civil lawsuit filed by New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman accusing him of running a phony school called “Trump University.” Trump claims Schneiderman is simply trying to extort money from him.
Trump’s website, 99percentapproval.com, went up less than 24 hours after Schneiderman sued him on Saturday.
At 6:41 p.m. Saturday, Trump tweeted, “Lightweight NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is trying to extort me with a civil law suit. See website 98percentapproval.com”
Trump University, or the Trump Entrepreneur Initiative, is an online education program that offers classes including real estate, wealth creation, and entrepreneurship. It does not offer degrees or college credits, and it is not an accredited college.
On the site, it claims “Trump Univesity has a 98% approval rating. So why is New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman wasting million in taxpayer money going after them?”
That approval is allegedly from 98 percent of students, who said the program was “excellent.” It is unclear how long ago that survey was given. The surveys that appear on the website are only from 2007 to 2010.
The site claims that Schneiderman spends all his time on “mundane matters.”
“This website was created to bring to the public's attention the gross incompetence of New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.”
Schneiderman says Trump University was a fraud. He claims many of the 5,000 students enrolled, who paid $35,000, thought they would meet Trump or at least get an apprenticeship. Neither ever happened.
"The attorney general has been angry because he felt that Mr. Trump and his various companies should have done much more for him in terms of fundraising," said Micheal D. Cohen, Trump’s attorney. "This entire investigation is politically motivated and it is a tremendous waste of taxpayers' money."
The website claims “this is not the first time Eric Schneiderman has used his stature as Attorney General for his own political gain or to attack critics of President Obama.”
"Donald Trump will not sit back and be extorted by anyone, including the attorney general," Cohen said.
“Let’s be real: if this weren’t Trump, there would be no investigation!” the website says.
