Kansas City animal rescue workers are calling this one of the worst animal abuse cases they’ve ever seen, and it’s easy to see why.
A Tibetan Spaniel named Roadrunner was brought to a local animal hospital in horrific condition on Sunday night. The dog’s owner beat him severely, bashed his eyes and threw him off a third-story balcony before leaving him for dead.
Witnesses called animal control immediately.
"I saw the dog fall from the third floor," witness Terrance Hent told WNEM.
When police went to interview the dog’s owner, she claimed innocence and said the dog was hit by a car.
"I was in shock," owner Kimberl Bond said. "I was in complete shock. I didn't know how to feel or what. I've lost animals before but not like this."
Police have subpoenaed Bond while they determine what to charge her with. Witnesses who saw the abuse think it’s ridiculous that Bond wasn’t arrested.
"Police came and didn't arrest her," Hent said. "They just let her go, and ... that's just BS."
Roadrunner, who will be blind for life after losing his eyes during the abuse, was released from the hospital this week and is “resting comfortably” in a foster home. Rescue officials say he will eventually be adopted into a permanent home but will need plenty of time first to adjust to life without sight.
