A dog in South Carolina who was found with her muzzle taped shut is on the mend and expected to make a full recovery after previously being in critical condition.
According to reports, 15-month-old Caitlyn is recovering after being operated on last week and is doing so well that she did not need to undergo an additional surgery that was planned for earlier this week.
Caitlyn was found on a doorstep last month with taped wrapped around her muzzle — so tightly wrapped that her tongue became caught between her teeth. It is believed that she had the tape around her for up to 48 hours before she was discovered.
The terrified dog was taken to the Charleston Animal Society in critical condition, and underwent surgery to fix her lips and cheek. Her snout was reportedly swollen to double its normal size and her tongue was discolored and bloody. Though she was originally expected to lose a third of her tongue, Caitlyn ultimately only lost about an eighth.
William Leonard Dodson, a 41-year-old North Charleston resident, was arrested on June 4th and charged with animal cruelty. Bail was set at $50,000 and he was ordered to give up a second dog that was found at his home. Dodson reportedly bought Caitlyn last month for $20, and later admitted to taping her snout shut because she wouldn’t stop barking.
