Before And After Pictures: Dog's Amazing Recovery After Being Found On The Brink Of Death

An abandoned and emaciated dog is almost done pulling off an improbable recovery. Alex, a Weimaraner, was found wandering the streets of New Orleans painfully malnourished and on the brink of death. One surgery and thousands of calories later, and Alex is beginning to look like a whole new animal.

Alex was first pulled off the streets by animal control workers. When staff from the Southern Animal Foundation saw photos of Alex, they knew he would be euthanized if they didn’t intervene. The dog, who belongs to a breed of sturdy, athletic hunters, had been reduced to a walking skeleton.

When Southern Animal workers brought Alex in, this is what he looked like:

An x-ray of Alex’s stomach revealed how truly desperate he was for food. He’d eaten rocks and twigs in a desperate attempt to nourish himself. When workers fed him, his stomach bloated immediately. It had been so long since he’d eaten that his body couldn’t even process food properly anymore. A surgery, thankfully a successful one, was performed immediately.

Southern Animal Foundation workers are now slowly nursing Alex back to health. The organization's assistant director, Deanna Theis, is amazed Alex is alive.

“How he is still alive at this point is pretty much a miracle,” Theis told Fox 8. “He was extremely close to death.”

Perhaps just as incredible as Alex’s recovery is his sweet disposition toward humans, despite what he's been through.

“He was still so nice and sweet and forgiving despite, obviously, the neglect he has suffered for some time,” Theis said.

Southern Animal Foundation plans to keep Alex for a few more months until he regains his full health and strength. Once that happens, they will look for a new lifetime owner for him.
