Officers serving a search warrant for drugs in the 1700 block of Foster Avenue in Conway, South Carolina, discovered six Pit Bulls and a rooster which police believe were involved in fighting. Earl Dion Busbee, 34, who resides at the location was charged with owning or harboring an animal for fighting or attacking and four counts of trafficking cocaine.
According to the police report, on July 25 at approximately 1:00 p.m., Conway Police Department animal control officers were called to assist the 15th Judicial Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit with multiple dogs that were located in the backyard of a residence where a search warrant was being executed.
Animal control officers located the six pit bulls and one rooster in the backyard of the residence. Four of the dogs were secured by log chains and the other two were in pens located inside a fenced area.
Also located behind the fence was a DogtrotterUSA treadmill used for dog training and conditioning, along with multiple dog harnesses, additional logging chains, and an animal hide attached to a pulley system which is used to entice dogs to run on a treadmill.
Busbee voluntarily surrendered the treadmill, the rooster and four of the six dogs to animal control officers. Two of surrendered dogs were found to have scarring on their heads and bodies consistent with dog fighting. The surrendered animals were transported to Horry County’s Animal Care Center.
A rooster with its spurs removed was also located in a cage within the fenced enclosure, according to the report.
There is no information as to why Busbee was allowed to keep the other two dogs.
Records at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center indicate that Busbee was also charged with four counts of trafficking cocaine. He was held on a $5,000 bond for the animal-fighting charges and a $15,000 bond for the cocaine charges and was later released on bond.
DogtrotterUSA treadmills are made by Bob Lummus, aka Gambler, who was the owner of a famous fighting dog, Grand Champion Virgil (5XW), who is widely discussed on line and on Pit Bull/Game Dog forums.
Lummus claims that his DogtrotterUSA treadmills are “Super Duty, Professional Grade, Dog Treadmills, Made in America, and he underscores, “Our customers include The United States Navy and The New York City Police Dept.
The DogtrotterUSA disclaimer states, “However, from time to time someone will say to us that dog treadmills are only used for dog fighting. This statement could not be further from the truth and although we cannot do a background search on our customers. We will not knowingly sell any of our products to someone who intends to break the law or harm a animal in any way.”
Here is a dog being conditioned on a treadmill that the owner confirms was bought from Gambler (Bob Lummus):
