Citrus County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a Crystal River, Florida, residence on Saturday after receiving a 911 call at roughly 4:20 p.m. that a child had been attacked by dogs. Emergency rescue crews arrived at a residence at 8352 W. Oak Street to find the 2-year old boy already dead, according to WFLA.
Deputies report that they found the body of little Christopher Camejo in the backyard of the house with “marks on it consistent with a dog attack.” There was a total of eight dogs at the home, including two puppies, ABC News reported.
The boy’s mother, Claudia Scarbrough, 31, and his father, Christopher Camejo, 29, along with several friends and two other children, were reportedly inside the house, but the little boy was outside alone when the attack occurred. The two other children, ages 1 and 5, were taken into protective custody by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Deputies arrested the victim’s father on Saturday for violation of an injunction for protection from domestic violence--unrelated to the dog attack, Citrus County sheriff’s said in a news release. Camejo was taken to the Citrus County Jail for booking.
Citrus County Animal Control Officers responded and removed four Rottweilers and a smaller dog from the backyard. A Chihuahua and several puppies were left at the home, according to the Tampa Tribune.
The attack is under a continuing investigation by the Citrus County Sheriff’s office.
