The person who abandoned a dog at a train station in Scotland has been identified, and says the whole incident was the result of an online sale that went sour.
Kai, a Shar-Pei crossbreed, was found outside of Ayr Station on Jan. 2, tied to a suitcase filled with his toys, a pillow and food. The SPCA subsequently took Kai in while authorities attempted to locate his last owner. The search led them to 39-year-old Fin Rayner, who explained the incident to the Daily Record.
Rayner said the situation began when she’d gone to Ayr Station to buy a dog she found online. When she arrived at the station, she discovered that the dog was not the same as the one advertised.
“I went to Ayr to buy the dog,” Rayner said. “The guy rushed out with a food chest and lead on the dog. But I could see there was something up because he was very skinny. I said I wanted to take the dog for a walk, so he asked me for £150 [$177.80] as a deposit in case I didn’t come back. Then I saw him tearing off in his car. I phoned and said, ‘You better come back for your dog.' He never turned up.”
Rayner told reporters that she soon began to panic. She was allegedly in a hurry to make the last train to Aberdeen with her young daughter, who suffers from asthma.
“I thought I’d take the dog to Aberdeen but my son phoned and said the photo from the ad was an American picture from 2005,” she said. “I said to a member of staff it was somebody else’s dog. I said, ‘I’m just going to tie him up out there,' and I did that.”
Rayner defended her actions, maintaining that she did nothing wrong.
“What about me and my daughter, what we had to go through?” she said. “I told somebody, I made sure the dog was safe.”
The SPCA was reportedly flooded with offers from around the world from people wanting to give Kai a home. “We have had offers from all over the world, from Hong Kong to Tennessee and California, it has really captured the public’s imagination,” SPCA employee Alan Grant said.
More than £2,500 ($2,964) was raised for Kai, whose real name was discovered to be Pluto, since the story broke.
