Detroit Police Force Black Men To Sing, ‘Dance Like A Chimp’ While Videotaping

An internal investigation has been launched into the conduct of Grosse Pointe Park police after humiliating videos were uncovered of African American men being ordered to sing or dance like a chimps.

Reuters reporter Steve Neavling reported the investigation on Motor City Muckraker this past Friday, citing an anonymous source.

While he posted two videos to the blog, Nealing told the Huffington Post that there are almost a dozen similar videos that he did not share because of their “humiliating nature.”

The footage, shot from within a police cruiser, was allegedly showed to family and friends of Grosse Pointe Park police. In most of the videos African American men standing outside the squad car are asked to sing or “dance like a chimp.”

Several officers are reportedly under investigation.

Neavling also published a photograph of a black man riding in the back of a trailer. It was allegedly taken by Officer Mike Najm, who reportedly texted it to others with the message “Go to love the coloreds.”

In another video, Najm can allegedly be heard telling a mentally ill black man to sing.

The Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Department told Huffington Post that this kind of conduct from officers is not tolerated.

“On Thursday, November 14 2013, the Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Department was contacted by an individual who said that he was in possession of video clips and a photo of African American males,” said Grosse Pointe Park Police Captain David Loch said in an emailed statement.

“The video clips and photo are allegedly made by an officer of this department,” the statement continued. “The department has begun an internal investigation of this matter. The Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Department does not tolerate unprofessional conduct by its officers when interacting with any citizen they may come in contact with.”

The Detroit suburb of Gross Pointe Park is about 85 percent white and has about 11,500 residents, according to Huffington Post.
