After Long Fight, Corey Haim Apparently Fell Victim to His Demons

Corey Haim said he first tried drugs when he was around 15 years old. “I was working on ‘Lost Boys’ when I smoked my first joint,” he told the British tabloid The Sun in 2004. It turned out to be the beginning of the end for the actor. “I did cocaine for about a year and a half, then it led to crack,” he said.

Haim tried to clean himself up. He went to rehab, where he was put on prescription drugs. He ended up abusing those, too.

“I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck,” he said. “But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day.”

Haim's grieving mother told investigators looking into her son's death that he "had problems with prescription meds and that he had been in rehab on and off over the years," Los Angeles County Coroner Assistant Chief Ed Winter told People magazine.

Haim had been living with his mother as she battled cancer, Judy Haim tells RadarOnline. "I am a cancer victim and Corey was helping me at home,” she said. "He was a good boy. I’m devastated by his death."

Haim showed early promise with his work in Lucas and The Lost Boys. But by his own admission, the drugs did him in.

“I feel like with myself I ruined myself to the point where I wasn’t functional enough to work for anybody, even myself. I wasn’t working,” he told ABC's "Nightline" is 2007.

He continued to act, however, but never really appeared in anything of any consequence. He did attempt a high-profile comeback with the reality show The Two Coreys, co-starring his long-time friend Corey Feldman. It was cancelled in 2008 after 2 seasons. Feldman said Haim's drug use strained their working and personal relationships.

It's not clear if Haim was in rehab at the time of his death. But it appears he was trying to do the right thing up until the end, helping his mom fight cancer. However, his other battle just could not be won.
