Some say Fox News Channel took its “Fair and Balanced” motto too far Thursday, after it invited criminal defense attorney Joseph DiBenedetto to make a case for why an alleged rape victim was asking to be assaulted.
After a Missouri county prosecutor asked for a special prosecutor to review the case of the 14-year-old who was allegedly raped by a high school football player, Fox News asked DiBenedetto for his opinion of the case.
He replied that there are obvious signs that the girl is lying about her situation.
“She is leaving her home at 1 a.m. in the morning and nobody forced her to drink,” DiBenedetto said. “She gets caught by her mom, she’s embarrassed and the easy way out here is, ‘Mom, someone took advantage of me.’”
DiBenedetto said that even if the facts were accurate and that the young girl was raped, she should expect nothing else after sneaking out into the early morning.
“I’m not saying she deserved to be raped, but...” DiBenedetto added.
Fox News host Shepard Smith accused DiBenedetto of turning an alleged rape victim into a liar and crime committer, calling his assumption a far jump.
DiBenedetto merely replied that it is probably that she lied about her circumstances, noting that she was not the first and would not be the last.
