Decision-Making Scholarship Winner And Friend Accused Of Hurling Bricks At Cars

A New York decision-making scholarship winner and his friend were arrested on Jan. 2 after allegedly hurling bricks at drivers, permanently damaging one woman’s eye.

Police arrested Jacob Palant, 19, and his 17-year-old friend for reportedly throwing bricks and cinder blocks at cars on the Meadowbrook State Parkway on Dec. 26, 2015, reports the Daily Mail.

The crime led to thousands of dollars in damage and hurt at least two people, inflicting irreversible damage upon 22-year-old Brianna Rios’s cornea.

Ryan Civitello, 21, was bruised by a brick, which caused about $1,500 in damage to his vehicle, CBS News reports.

Another brick caused an estimated $5,000 in damages to a Jeep.

“Would they do that to their family or their sister or their brother driving a car?” one driver said to CBS News. “No, of course not.”

“Why would you even do that?” another driver said. “What’s the sense?”

Specific charges filed against the two teenagers include misdemeanor reckless endangerment, felony assault and criminal mischief.

While Palant was released on $25,000 cash bail, his friend remained in jail on $1 million bond, which includes an additional charge related to a previous domestic violence case.

The 17-year-old faces charges of criminal contempt and aggravated harassment for reportedly threatening to slit his ex-girlfriend’s throat and shoot her mother.

Meanwhile, Palant received a $125 Barry Tech “Shared Decision Making Scholarship” last year.

Palant describes himself on Instagram as “a redneck welder," a "huge stoner" and "an urban explorer" who "love[s] guns, trucks and anything country."

It is unclear what motivated the pair to hurl projectiles at cars, but it is not the first time an incident like this has happened in the area.

“We had several reports of youths throwing bricks [and] rocks over the overpass onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway,” Major David Candelaria, commander of the New York State Police Troop L, told CBS News in December 2015.
