A South African pastor has sparked outrage after commanding worshippers at his church to eat rat poison in order to show their faith in God.
The Daily Mail reports that Pastor Light Monyeki commanded his worshippers at the Grace Living Hope Ministries to drink from a bottle of water that was laced with Rattex in order to ‘nourish their bodies’ and ‘heal their sickness.’
Monyeki himself took a sip, which was followed by many congregates rushing forth to voluntarily drink from the Rattex laced water. Monyeki himself even poured the poisoned water down people’s throats.
The church wrote on its Facebook page:
The man of God, Prophet Light Monyeki demonstrates power of faith by causing [congregates] to drink Rattax; deadly poison to show forth their faith. As he was doing that he said “we do not need to proclaim faith because we are believers. If nyaope [a street drug] boys can smoke Rattax for more than eight years, who are we? Death has no power over us.” Then he declared life from above upon the water mixed with Rattax; and spoke nourishment unto bodies and healing unto the sick. A multitude of [congregates] voluntarily ran to the front to have a drink of the deadly poison. After declaring nourishment and healing, Prophet Light was the first one to drink.
Response to the story on Facebook was swift. One user wrote: “This is religion in a nut shell. Tell stupid people something enough, and they start to believe it!”
Another added: “Not a pastor. There's no scripture that compels or tells you to do this. While with ISIS they can point to the Koran and show you the passages. Does this nut job have something to do with Christianity, in so much as he calls himself Christian. While ISIS has a lot more to back them up with what they say than this guy.”
Rattex prevents clotting in the body, which means that those who ingest it are at risk of bleeding to death.
This is not the first time a South African pastor has convinced people to ingest something strange. In 2014, a pastor convinced his congregation to eat grass, claiming it would give them strength and healing. And in 2015, a separate pastor convinced his congregates to eat a live snake, claiming he had turned it to chocolate.
