Though his story went viral last year after claiming he died on camera in order to get out of paying child support, John McCroy is now finding himself behind bars.
McCroy received a sentence of 60 days in jail as well as three years of probation after pleading guilty to two charges of failure to pay child support -- a felony in Wisconsin.
The father was also able to pay more than $10,000 in outstanding child support despite being unemployed.
According to his lawyer, McCroy's grandfather helped pay for the fees.
McCroy's infamy began in July 2014, after he told a reporter at FOX6 that he could not pay child support due to the fact that he died in a car accident. The interview was shared amongst social media platforms, where it quickly went viral.
At that time, McCroy had only paid $100 in child support since his daughter was born in 2009.
After a car accident in 2010, he attempted to claim disability. He told the court that he was unable to work due to his injuries sustained from the accident.
Officials discovered that he was not disabled, however. He was later released from jail -- in an unrelated crime -- on work release. He found a job with an auto shop and worked 10 hours each day, five days a week with overtime. He did not pay child support during this period either.
Months after the accident occurred, prosecutors were able to find videos of McCroy dancing in nightclubs as well as photos of him at the gym running on treadmills.
“We found photos dating back to February 2010, which was less than three months after his accident, which showed the defendant partying in night clubs,” prosecutors said in court.
In addition to jail time, McCroy was ordered to pay $100 a month in child support or else he violates his probationary terms.
For the mother of his daughter, the ruling comes as a blessing, though she is unsure that he will pay.
“His first and last payment was in 2010, and he only made these payments because of what was going on,” Canience Haynes, his baby's mother, said. "He won’t make nothing else."
