Three black suspects reportedly approached a white man in the ethnically diverse neighborhood of Adams Morgan in Washington, D.C., early on Saturday morning and assaulted him after they shouted “This is for Trayvon.”
Police say the suspects robbed him of his cell phone and wallet. They are investigating the incident as if it were a hate crime.
The victim suffered only minor injuries, The Inquisitr reported.
“There is no pattern in these types of crimes," said D.C. police spokesman Araz Alali. "These attacks are outrageous; we are doing everything in our power to see that they certainly don’t occur. If they do occur, we are going to aggressively investigate them and bring people to justice.”
This is not the first “This is for Trayvon” attack that has occurred. A white Mississippi jogger said that he was attacked earlier this month under similar circumstances, although no other witnesses have come forward.
A Hispanic man was allegedly chased and beaten by 12 black teens who shouted “This is for Trayvon” in Baltimore on July 14. Police claim that the incident was unrelated to the acquittal of George Zimmerman.
Zimmerman, 29, was found not guilty of both second-degree murder and manslaughter for fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
