DC Police Chief Vows to Arrest Armed Protesters

Armed protestors have promised to march across the Arlington Memorial Bridge into Washington DC on July 4 to protest gun control laws. Washington D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier will be waiting for them on the other side of the bridge, cuffs in hand.

Lanier has promised to arrest anybody who crosses the bridge carrying loaded rifles. She argued that walking into Washington D.C. with loaded rifles is a violation of the law, regardless of whether or not it’s part of a protest. Carrying a loaded weapon of any type is currently illegal in the District of Columbia.

She said simply, “We will arrest all protestors.” If Lanier truly intends to make good on that claim, then protestors can expect a close encounter with hundreds of police decked out in full riot gear.

The proposed protest is already a hotly debated issue. Some gun rights activists claim that something drastic needs to be done, while others argue that violating the law so openly will have terrible consequences. Tim Brown of the pro-gun blog Freedom Post, for example, wrote, “let me just come right out and say this as simple and as blunt as I can say it: This is a very, very, very, very, very bad idea. It’s also stupid.”

Anthony Martin, a conservative blogger at Examiner, added, “All it would take is one trigger happy protester, and police would open fire on the protesters, killing them all with the full weight of the law on their side.”

As if the situation wasn’t already delicate enough, libertarian talk show host Adam Kokesh is at the center of protest, organizing protestors and encourage gun rights sentiment. Kokesh has admitted that he has a history of mental instability.

Kokesh has argued that citizens need to take up civil disobedience in order to protest gun control.

There’s no question that the protest would make an impact, but whether or not it will make the type of impact that Kokesh hopes is still up for debate.
